Over parenting and a supermom

desigirl | June 10, 2008

I read this rather interesting article at Babble.com - it is all about how attachment parenting has gone into overdrive and parents are now like frenzied people, trying to outdo each other, hovering over their offspring and generally being big pains.
Read it yourself and tell me what you think. Do you agree with the author’s viewpoint or you think different?

In a totally different vein, read about this Canadian supermum, who raced all over town to make sure the drunk driver didn’t do anybody harm. Did I mention she was 9 months pregnant at the time?

Havent read the Babble article, but wanted to say - parents do seem to want too much from kids these days - the celebrity parents - some of the them are just plain NUTS!

Now going off to read the article!

Well..yes and no with the first article.. she makes sense

Well..yes and no with the first article.. she makes sense when she talks about how we should avoid micromanaging our children’s lives. But in today’s day and age I think that has to be a conscious effort. Seriously what all do we have to think of - not to get hyper and be a gimpy over-involved parent and then again not to get carried away with the “benign neglect” parenting style either..too much media hype and attention either ways..our parents had it easier. They truly did.

And for the second article..WOW..just seriously wow. I am in my eight month and I feel indignant when am asked to get a glass of water for someone…jeez..

Gahh why are we shouting in your comment space btw

K3,
Like RV says, our parents did have it easy - as they weren’t bombarded by hundreds of contradictory messages coming at them from all quarters. Sometimes, too much science can be a bad thing too!!

RV (feels weird to call u that!),
My feelings eggjackly! Nine months gone and she chases people down the road?!! whoa!!!
I don’t know why we are all shouting here babe - design fault, apparently. I knew when everyone liked this layout that something wrong will pop up soon! sigh!

Totally awesome article and I agree with EVERY word. My favorite line -
Mothers and fathers lose themselves in their roles as parents, while kids never find themselves.

Is it the same in Britain. Here it is to the point of being ridiculous. Someone from work, once thought of suing her son’s preschool because he fell from a chair and bumped his head. Simple bump. no blood.

Wow! That surely is the limit, Dottie. But then, America is Suing Central, isn’t it? It hasn’t become as bad yet over here. But the craze with designer gear has caught on. Parents pushing their babies in buggies that look more like space capsules than a pushchair!! Am danged if I buy some overpriced pap just to look cool. Let’s face it, I have established I have no street cred by standing at the school gates in salwar kameez anyways!! :D

I think moderation is the key…Not being a parent myself, this may be a lot easier to say than do, I suppose! But yes, I do see some parents who obsess over every tiny detail and some who just let their kids be, so long as they set some boundaries; The second style seems to be a lot easier on the kids, and the parents!

Nice layout btw…

Apu, I think it is easier said than done cos

desigirl | June 11, 2008 | 5:19 am

Apu, I think it is easier said than done cos parental guilt is the evil twin that latches on to you, making you second guess every sane choice / action. But yeah, I think I’d rather belong to the second category than the first and give my kids room to breathe!

Lord, Deej, you have NO idea how domineering some parents

Suki | June 11, 2008 | 3:53 pm

Lord, Deej, you have NO idea how domineering some parents can be. The kids have not one square inch to move freely in, and then the parents complain about
1) why the kid doesn’t respect them, AND
2) why the kid can’t make his/her own decisions.
Parenting can be messed, just like all other things. It’s such a fine line, and complicated by the fact that we’re dealing with another person, but a person who can’t exactly communicate or form his/her own ideas too well yet. Yeah yeah, teaching is teaching me a lot and I sound presumptuous but I shake in my shoes at the thought of having to nurture a child from birth. How do you do it?

And as for the Canadian supermum - hats off!

Suki How we do it is purely cos we dont know

desigirl | June 11, 2008 | 5:45 pm

Suki
How we do it is purely cos we dont know exactly what we are letting ourselves in for! If we did, we’d all run a mile!!! :D And you? presumptuous? nah!

Spicy Mama | June 11, 2008 | 6:16 pm

Good Lord….as an Indian women brought up here in the USA, raising the next generation of kids here. I am rolling my eyes right now. You know what kills me, is that between the beautiful wooden swing sets everyone has sitting in the backyard (which took months of research I am sure because you just had to make sure that got a creative playthings brand over a Eastern Gym brand…LOL)….is that those same 3000 dollar swingsets look lovely on the perfectly manicured lawn…but guess what folks..NO ONE PLAYS ANYMORE…..at least not outside. What happened to playing “spy”, or running around in the sprinklers….or heres a thought…making mud pies on the sidewalk? As a mother of three girls…I am pushed both ways…to make sure that the girls excel so I raise strong women, but there is a large part of me that says…its no big deal to have “BRINNER” (breakfast for dinner)…I mean seriousely….I hardly doubt that they are going to need to have a session with Dr. Phil in the near future.

Oh and throw the Indian aspect in there too. I feel like obama. Are my kids just not “Indian enough?—because I havent sent them to shloka class, to tabla class, to kathak class..instead my girls are in dance, The little gym, girl scouts and I just handle the youth group for the temple for the “Fun Stuff”.

Aye’ Where does it end Na,

Regards-
